Introducing: The Kerf Shell

The method of bending wood into drum shells is an ancient and sacred woodworking practice that has been perfected for over a century. Only in the recent past has a new machining technology become available, unlocking a new method of creating a solid wood drum shell.

The Kerf Shell is made using ultra-modern precision CNC machining. With a goldilocks combination of geometry, the world’s thinnest carbide-tipped saw blade, and a lot of craftsman finesse, the kerf shell comes alive out of one solid piece of wood with out steaming, laminating, or stave constructing.

Each kerf cut on the inside of the shell is cut with precise measurements to remove just the right amount of material from one side of a solid piece of wood. The kerf cuts do not go all the way through the shell. Instead, they leave an outer solid layer which allows the shell to bend into a cylinder while all of the kerf cuts close up on the inside, making it a rigid drum shell.

The shell is held in place by one structural tongue-and-groove glue joint which includes less than one ounce of glue, allowing our kerf shell to provide a pure, crisp, wood tone drum that has tuning versatility and projection for every setting and style.
